BASTION:
Something that keeps or defends a belief or a way of life that is disappearing or threatened.
Five years ago, Kayla and I were fully invested in careers that provided us with a comfortable living and relieved us of the paycheck-to-paycheck stress we had experienced throughout our adult lives. It was a new feeling, to not worry about money as much anymore. Although we only saw our two daughters for 3 to 5 hours a day and had limited time together, we could afford to dine out as often as we pleased, buy new vehicles, and pay off old bills. I believe it is commonly called “living the dream”, but in retrospect it was less a dream and more a materialistic-focused nightmare.
When COVID hit, we reacted like most people in that we hunkered down as the world came to a halt and pressures built throughout our country with people taking strong stances and feeding ever growing animosities. It was during this time that we decided to finally act on a decade old dream of creating a homestead and retreating further into the safety and peace of our land. As we began the mental and physical shift into digging our roots deep into the land, we observed our friends consider moving away and vaccinations become essentially mandatory; it was in that chaotic atmosphere that we chose our name of Last Bastion Homestead.
I always liked the word "bastion" and the strength it embodies. This word epitomizes our sentiments toward our chosen lifestyle and how strongly we value our freedom of choice in all matters.
Ultimately, we had to ask ourselves if there was another place we would rather live and if anywhere else would be better than what we already have. The answer to both questions was a resounding no. We are aware that the root of the problem lies with malevolent and powerful groups that dictate life in the USA, and living in a divided nation fueled by 24/7 hatred doesn't improve anything. The truth of the matter is that we are powerless to change it, but it doesn’t mean the we are helpless in how we prepare for our future.
What we can do is continue to enhance our self-sufficiency, assist others in developing their own land, and, through it all, cultivate a community of like-minded individuals and families who are eager to find the type of community that existed in this country no more than three decades ago.
United we Stand. Divided we Fall.
So glad you're here!!
